Yoast SEO Plugin – Explained

Choose a focus keyword

When writing a blog post or creating a new page on WordPress, you should have a good idea of what keyword or key phrase you want it to rank for. This is your focus keyword, which will be utilised by the Yoast SEO plugin to help you optimise your content. Underneath ‘Snippet Preview’ in your CMS, you’ll see a section called ‘Focus Keyword.’ It’s here that you’ll enter your keyword or key phrase. The plugin will then tell you underneath where you have used your keyword within your content and where you have failed to.

The idea is to use your focus keyword in all of the places listed including: article heading, page title, page URL, content and meta description. The more green yes signs you get, the better optimised your site is.

View your page analysis

After sorting out your focus keyword, you’ll need to take a look at the Page Analysis tab. This is basically a scoring page, which will tell you how well you are doing in terms of optimising your post or page for search engines. You’ll see that there are a number of circles, which will either be green, amber or red. The idea is to get as many green circles as possible, as that’ll mean your page is well optimised.

The great thing about this page is that it’ll tell you what you’re doing wrong (and right). For example, if your keyword density is too low or if you’ve failed to use your keyword or key phrase in subheadings. Follow the advice it gives you to enhance your post or page’s SEO.

Common mistakes to avoid

Failing to use keywords in your page title

Many fashion bloggers choose to use creative titles, rather than titles that tell users and search engines what the post is about. Whilst creative titles can be imaginative and fun, they’re not going to benefit your blog in terms of SEO. Try and fit your focus keyword in naturally to get the green light from Yoast.

Forgetting to use alt tags

When uploading images to your fashion blog, it’s crucial not to forget to use alt tags containing your keyword or key phrase. Alt tags tell search engines what the image features and what keyword or key phrase it should rank for, therefore making them important to your blog’s SEO.

Cheating the system

Something we see time and time again is bloggers cheating the Yoast system. The idea of the focus keyword feature is that it helps you to rank for the keyword you chose after doing keyword research, so it’s no good changing it to something else just to get your green lights!

Cheat the system and you’ll only end up ranking for a keyword that may not get half as many searches as your original choice. Instead edit your content so it naturally includes your focus keyword. It’ll mean working a little harder for the green lights but it’ll be worth it for the SEO benefits!
